NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (Oakwood Cemetery) - 150 years ago, Capt. Joel Robinson made history with a remarkable trip through the Niagara Gorge on the Maid of the Mist II Steamship. The 72 foot double paddle wheeler was sent through the rapids in an daring scramble to sell the craft to a Montreal businessman. Capt. Joel Robinson was at the helm as the ship tossed and turned in the foaming cauldron that is the Niagara River. Capt. Robinson lived to tell the tale, but never returned to the wheel of his beloved boat. Read about his adventure here.
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (Oakwood Cemetery) - World famous children's author Chris Van Allsburg is scheduled to make a book signing appearance at the Rapids Theater, Saturday, June, 4. Van Allsburg has written classics like "Jumanji" and "Polar Express". His latest project is about Oakwood Cemetery resident Annie Edson Taylor. Mrs. Taylor was a 62 year old school teacher when she decided to conquer Niagara Falls in a barrel on her quest for fame and fortune. She did indeed tame the Falls, but fame and fortune eluded her. Mr. Van Allsburg is scheduled to discuss the book and sign copies for fans. Admission is free. You can get more information at the Rapids Theatre website.

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (Oakwood Cemetery) - Memorial Day Services were held Monday, May 30, at 10:30am. Almost 75 were in attendance. Rev. Patrick Bradley and Trustees Connie Rodhy led the service honoring our servicemen, and those that have passed away this past year. Music was provided by the musical group "Step in Time" with Monte and Marcia Jones. Dr. Rocco LaRocca recited the poem "Flander's Field".
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (Oakwood Cemetery) - A brand new American flag is flying above the cemetery, on top of a newly spruced up flag pole. The six foot by ten foot flag was raised proudly above our Veteran's lot on Portage Road. This all in anticipation of the Memorial Day service to take place Monday, May 30. Oakwood Cemetery has Veterans from all the wars including the Revolutionary War. We also have Medal of Honor winner LeRoy Williams from the Civil War.
